Monitoring of water bodies in Hydrographic Region No. 5 – Tagus and Western rivers

In 2019, we implemented the River Habitat Survey (RHS) method, using a certified technician to monitor water bodies in the territorial areas managed by the APA departments in Hydrographic Region No. 5, which corresponds to the Tagus basin and western rivers. This monitoring aimed to improve and complement the criteria for classifying the status of inland surface water bodies. Over 100 sites were sampled, including large rivers, particularly stretches of the Tagus River, and a specific methodology was implemented for these sites.

Monitoring of surface water bodies

We implement Water Framework Directive (WFD) protocols for the biological elements ichthyofauna, phytobenthos, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, and phytoplankton (applicable only to reservoirs). We have technicians certified to apply the River Habitat Survey (RHS) method and calculate associated metrics.

Our services include:

Sampling of phytobenthos and macroinvertebrates;
Ichthyofauna sampling using electric fishing and nets, in lotic and lentic environments;
Macrophyte sampling;
Phytoplankton sampling in reservoirs;
Application of the River Habitat Survey (RHS) method;
Application of indexes to assess the status of water bodies in accordance with the WFD.
